- The Hillside Bottleneck road improvement project is designed to reduce congestion, increase mobility, and improve traffic safety on the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) from the East-West Tollway (I-88) and, the Tri-State Tollway (I-294) to east Mannheim Road (US 12/20/45).
Begun in the spring of 2000, this two-year project will be completed by January 1, 2002. The Hillside Bottleneck construction will be completed in two phases allowing plans for future expansion.

2000: Phase I Construction
During the 2000 construction season, work focused primarily on the following:
·Reconstruction and widening of Mannheim Road from the Eisenhower Expressway to
 Roosevelt Road.
·Reconstruction and reconfiguration of the Mannheim Road interchange with the
 Eisenhower Expressway.
·Reconstruction and widening of Roosevelt Road from the Tri-State Tollway to
 Mannheim Road
·Lengthening of the Illinois Central Railway and Darmstadt Road bridges over the
 East-West Tollway
·Reconstruction of North Frontage Road between Mannheim Road and Wolf Road
·Reconstruction of Harrison Street between Mannheim Road and Wolf Road

2001: Phase II Construction
During the 2001 construction season, work is focusing primarily on the following:
·Construction on the new two-lane collector-distributor road for eastbound I-88 and
I-290 vehicles exiting Mannheim Road to allow cars and trucks to bypass the bottleneck
 area completely
·Replacement and widening of Westchester Blvd. bridge over I-290

Three inbound and three outbound lanes on the Eisenhower will be open throughout 2001. However, nighttime off peak hour lane closures will occur to complete portions of the work.

Future Improvements to I-290
The road improvements associated with the Hillside Bottleneck project are only one part of a long rage plan to reduce the congestion that motorists experience driving on the Eisenhower Expressway.

While the current project will improve access to eastbound I-290 and reduce travel times from the I-88 York Road Toll Plaza through the Mannheim Road interchange, future improvements will reduce capacity on the Eisenhower between Mannheim Road and Austin Avenue.
